Installed quickly on XP SP3 machine.
Initially there seems to be no way to register the product using the registration key.
I clicked on 'Format Recovery' and the programme found the drives on the machine and gave an option to register.
Seems a very comprehensive programme.
The 'Home' button takes one to the product web site where it states that it can be installed on a USB drive if required, which is probably a wise thing to do.
Well, I installed it on W7 Home Basic machine. A bit confusing is the fact that there is no register button in main program window: you have to choose one of the recover commands first (kinda bended thinking, isn't it?) and there it appears, the yellow activate button.
Put in the code in the readme file and get the following message:
The license has expired, please register it on the website
Using Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
:And with one bound he was free:
Checking memory CPU usage shows that iCare is using around 25% of my processors time. It might be helpful to be able to give it greater priority (when you're desperate to comment on the program's virtues for example).
However, it seems you can run more than one instance of iCare at once. So I now have two iCare's each using a quarter of my CPU time. Opting for format recovery this time (19 minutes required for a 60GB SSD sector)....
Stopping scan when you get bored allows you to view what has already been scanned. You can filter by file type, size and date and by name (but not by text content) and the preview works well (Alternative list and thumbnail views). The program adds a tabbed window for each search (but doesn't seem to give details of the search parameters were
{Ignorance on my part - Is deletion recorded as a modification? If not would deletion time be a useful stat?}
There is no option to save the current state/list of files of the scanned directory, so if you forget to restore one of the files you really wanted, then you have to go through the whole process again - ugh).
Suggestions
Add ability to search for files by content
(Have option to filter) searchable file type list by those that are actually present.
Add option to for auto preview window
Show search parameter bubble when hovering over search result windo tabs
Make it possible to save the 'image' of the scanned folder(s) so that you can resume recovery if necessary (a much loved feature of Easy Data Recovery).
Spell check!
The message which pops up during a scan:
"Building lost file trees may take hours if the disc is large. Patience is appriciated {sic} since it will definitely pass." is definitely worth a bonus point (but adds weight to the last two suggestions).
Elsewhere: 1 hr, 36 mins to go.
{Interestingly, the second instance didn't show the register button, even though I haven't registered yet.
Finding it impossible to find a place to register, despite carefully (& gratefully) following the advice of Peter in #4 & Ostrov in #6. These didn't work for me. Nothing even remotely like a rego nook. What to do? I have no idea. It would be great if someone from the company is here to advise. It all seems very convoluted, which doesn't bode well....:((
Dear users,
Unfortunately our site was hacked some hours ago. That’s why the registration process was interrupted.
We have just fixed the problem and now the process goes smoothly. Try to activate your free copies right now.
The giveaway of the iCare Data Recovery v4.5.2 is extended for another 24 hours.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Best regards,
